Bretagne Culture Diversité
Bretagne Culture Diversité / Sevenadurioù Breizh, genuinely « Brittany, Culture and Diversity » (BCD), is an association that facilitates and promotes access for all to resources and knowledge about the French region of Brittany, and the diversity of its cultures.
At the heart of a network of cultural stakeholders and organisations, BCD encourages dialogue and partnerships to build connections between producers of knowledge, skills and cultural expressions from Brittany, its residents or those who have an interest in it. This is carried out through both physical and online events: training sessions, study days, conferences, exhibitions, interviews, and informal gatherings.
This ambition is reflected in three main missions, all of them contributing to the transveral objective of promoting cultural diversity.
To promote and disseminate Breton culture and knowledge
To improve access to, and to popularise cultural and scientific content related to Brittany
To inventory, preserve and transmit Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)
The Bretania portal is a single access point to all the cultural and heritage documents that have been digitised and made available through a close cooperation with a wide range of regional organisations and institutions.
This « digital portal of Brittany’s cultures » helps you find resources among more than 550,000 documents from Brittany’s digitised heritage collections, including videos, images, audio recordings, objects and much more.
The digital encyclopedia Bécédia covers a wide range of subjects, including history, geography, arts, ethnology and sociology. Each topic is explored by a specialist, creating a unique and original encyclopaedia that is regularly expanded with new resources : themed dossiers, web documentaries, videos, virtual exhibitions, podcasts…
Physical events such as conferences are also frequently organised in Brittany, in the framework of Bécédia.
Cultural heritage is part of everyday life. Games, storytelling, festoù-noz, maritime heritage, traditional crafts, pardons,… all these elements enrich Breton cultural life thanks to the efforts of many people. BCD carries out inventories and research on Brittany’s intangible cultural heritage (ICH). It supports local authorities, organisations, individuals and communities in the design and implementation of projects aimed at safeguarding and highlighting this living heritage.
TOWARDS EUROPE: FOCUS ON AWAVES PROJECT
Bretagne Culture Diversité is involved in its first European project, AWAVES, Atlantic Waves for Advancing Visionary, Equitable and Sustainable Tourism and Heritage. To identify, document, preserve and promote the maritime heritage of the Atlantic is the mission shared by BCD with its seven European partners. The project covers the entire Atlantic arc and in particular five pilot regions: the north of Ireland, Galicia (Spain), northern Portugal and the Azores, and Brittany and its islands, with a particular focus on their living heritage.
AWAVES aims to address common challenges that threaten to undermine the maritime hertiage’s preservation and transmission: climate change, economic and energy crises, demographic shifts, and widening intergenerational divides. At its heart, a European digital platform will map the tangible and intangible heritage of the Atlantic Arc, highlighting elements that are undervalued, endangered or still little known. The aim is to take stock of how maritime heritage is passed on across the Atlantic, to develop recommendations for a better preservation and transmission.
This project not only offers the opportunity to exchange knowledge and practices at a European level, but also to strengthen ties between heritage stakeholders, local authorities and communities. It is also a way of contributing to the celebration of cultural diversity on a global scale.
AWAVES is a 30-month project (November 2025 – May 2028), co-funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
